Solar on metal roofs

If you have a standing-seam metal roof, you're starting from one of the best surfaces there is for solar. Here's why, and what to check before you go ahead.

Mounting without holes

Standing-seam roofs have raised seams between panels. Special clamps grip those seams, and the solar rails attach to the clamps, so in most cases the roof surface is never drilled. Fewer penetrations means fewer places for water to get in.

A roof that lasts as long as the panels

A well-maintained metal roof can last 40 years or more, longer than the 25 to 30 year life of most solar panels. That means you're unlikely to need panel removal and reinstall for a roof replacement mid-way through the system's life.

Cooler panels, better output

Metal roofs reflect heat and allow air to circulate under the panels. Solar panels produce slightly more when they run cooler, which helps in Florida summers.

What to check first

  • Roof type: standing seam is ideal. Corrugated or exposed-fastener metal roofs need different mounts that do penetrate the roof.
  • Condition: loose seams, rust or damaged coatings should be fixed first.
  • Warranty: ask your roofer whether seam clamps affect your roof warranty.
  • Wind rating: clamps and rails must be rated for local wind loads.
